Installing Plasma Cutters for Own Use by Oleg Gladshteyn
You should opt for installing plasma cutter for own use if you often need a cutting tool for repair and maintenance work and somewhat tired of your present mechanical saw. The advantages of plasma cutting are ease of use, superior quality cuts and greater speeds.
Plasma Cutting Technology is nothing complex. Simply stated, plasma is superheated and compressed air that
ionizes to form a conductive gas. This gas conducts electricity from the torch of the plasma cutter to the work piece. This is accomplished through a conductive electrode and copper nozzle on the machine.
It is possible to undertake plasma cutting on any type of conductive metal including mild steel, aluminum, stainless steel etc. Of course, with mild steel, operators will be able to achieve faster, thicker cuts than with alloys. Plasma cutting does not require the use of flammable or explosive materials and is therefore, safer to operate.
The only demerit is that plasma cutting machines are costlier than oxyacetylene. Besides, oxyacetylene does not require access to electrical power or compressed air which may make it more convenient for some users.
Here is a broad guideline for installing plasma cutter for your own use:
Make out a list of the parts/components needed and try to get familiar with each one of them. Thereafter carefully study the schematic and prepare a layout diagram. Please know that the board layout diagram is the key to building, repairing, and modifying process of the proposed cutter.
When you start mounting the parts, it will be helpful if you think of the board into four convenient sections - Power Control, High Current DC, Low Voltage DC and High Voltage Arc Start.
Power Control - 3KVA step down transformer and contactor. Mount the transformer off board as it is heavy and unwieldy. Wire the contactor so when the head trigger is pressed, it turns the contactor on and allows the DC components to come on line.
High Current DC/Bridge Rectifier/Large Capacitors/Reed Switch (which may be used as a current sensor). It allows the high voltage arc system to fire and as soon as high current begins to travel to the head and cutting starts, it shuts down the high voltage arc system while cutting. In the event you lose your fire it will re-start the arc and resume operations automatically.
Low Voltage DC - The low voltage DC components are mixed with power switch and 120 volt terminals - Power Switch/120-volt terminal blocks/12 volt transformer, Low voltage bridge rectifier/Auto relays/Terminal strip though 4 position is all that you will need.
High Voltage Arc Start -Microwave capacitor, a common dimmer switch rated for 15 amps. A Ford/Chevy ignition coil. You have terminals to all parts that get an external connection outside of the system. All you have to do is to run a piece of wire in-between. When wiring all the components, you may use Chevy board layout diagram to run the wires.
Thoroughly check all wires before mounting external parts. It may take an hour at best to finally assemble it all. After getting it all together, connect the air tank hose and put the pressure setting at 28 as a safe point to start. Now, enjoy the plasma cutting!
